Women Of Steel

I recently visited Pakistan and closely observed the older and younger generations. It became evident to me that there are significant differences between older and younger women, particularly when comparing my mother and her khala to women of my generation. As I sat in front of them, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible strength and consistency displayed by both of them. They were raised side by side, got married, raised numerous children, and survived within a large joint family system from a young age. They built countless enduring family relationships and served as the backbone of their homes, all while being resourceful in order to make the most of their husbands' limited income.

Every wrinkle on their faces told a story of struggle. I witnessed both of them comparing their hands, proudly showcasing the signs of hard work. They stood tall, yet remained down to earth, patiently listening to our seemingly insignificant and exaggerated tales of struggle. In contrast, my generation has spent much of our lives focused on education, typically have one or two children, spend only a few hours in the kitchen, live relatively private lives with limited friends and relationships, rely on hired help, drive cars, seek refuge in jobs to escape unpleasant environments, and strive to fulfill our materialistic desires or support husbands.

Despite considering myself a strong woman, sitting in front of them made me feel incredibly small. Listening to their stories at times left me feeling insignificant. I am compelled to shout out and pay tribute to the women of the last generation, who deserve to be recognized as "Women of Steel."

The women of the last generation, often referred to as "Women of Steel," possess qualities and experiences that deserve admiration and recognition. Their lives were marked by resilience, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to their families and communities.

These women grew up during a time when societal norms and expectations placed great importance on traditional gender roles. They faced numerous challenges and responsibilities, but they approached them with determination and grace. From a young age, they learned to navigate the intricacies of a joint family system, where multiple generations lived together under one roof. This required them to develop strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and the ability to maintain harmonious relationships with various family members.

Marriage was often an essential milestone for these women, and they embraced the responsibilities that came with it. They not only raised their own children but also played a vital role in the upbringing of their siblings' and extended family members' children. They took on the role of nurturers, caregivers, and educators, instilling values, traditions, and cultural heritage in the younger generation.

Financially, these women had to be resourceful and creative with limited resources. They skillfully managed their households, stretching their husbands' income to meet the needs of their families. They were masters of budgeting, finding ways to save, and making the most of what they had. Their ability to make do with less was truly remarkable.

The women of the last generation also had a profound impact on their communities. They were the pillars of strength and support for their neighbors, offering guidance, assistance, and a listening ear. Their wisdom and life experiences made them trusted advisors and problem solvers. They played an active role in community gatherings, religious ceremonies, and social events, contributing to the fabric of society.

In contrast, the younger generation has witnessed significant societal changes and advancements, leading to different lifestyles and priorities. Education has become a top priority, with many women pursuing higher studies and professional careers. The focus has shifted towards individual aspirations, personal growth, and achieving a work-life balance. While these changes have brought their own set of opportunities and challenges, they have also led to a departure from the traditional roles and responsibilities shouldered by the women of the last generation.

It is important to acknowledge and honor the contributions of the women of the last generation. Their strength, resilience, and sacrifices paved the way for the progress and opportunities that subsequent generations enjoy. Their stories serve as a reminder of the power of determination, selflessness, and a deep sense of familial and societal responsibility.

As we celebrate the accomplishments of the present, it is equally crucial to pay tribute to the women who came before us, recognizing their invaluable contributions and the impact they had on shaping our families, communities, and society as a whole. The "Women of Steel" deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.

Happy Women's Day
